Longstone GAC Notes

 (Sunday, November 04)

*Lower Mourne played Mayobridge, reigning Down and Ulster U-21 title holders, in the South Down U-21 championship on Sunday in Longstone Park. The visitors won on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-8 with two late goals proving to be the difference after a tough game. At half-time the home team led 0-5 to 0-3, but a good start to the second period by Mayobridge brought the sides level at 0-5 apiece. Lower Mourne then proceeded to dominate the rest of the 3rd quarter in terms of possession but their shooting let them down and with ten minutes to go the teams were tied at 0-6 apiece. The Sky Blues played better football in the remaining time and finished off their scoring chances to win the game. Lower Mourne have played two group games, with 1 win and 1 defeat so far, and have two games still to play. Next game is away to Clonduff this Sunday at 2pm. Most consistent players for the home side were Martin Quinn, Mickey Sloan, Ciaran Rogers, Shane Harrison, Conor Doran and Ryan O’Hare. Players to impress for Mayobridge included Keith Quinn, Corey Quinn, John McClorey and Shane McNamee. Lower Mourne: J Trimble, M Quinn, R Doran, C Cunningham, Ciaran Rogers, M Sloan, R Clerkin, S Harrison, C Akdeniz, R McDowell, M Ireland, C Doran, R McCulla, Cathal Rogers, R O’Hare. *The U-16s had a challenge game in Longstone on Saturday against Antrim club, Tir na nOg of Randalstown. At half-time the visitors led 0-4 to 0-1, but both teams increased the effort levels significantly during the second half and at full-time Tir na nOg had won by a point, 3-5 to 2-7. Following this both clubs played an U-14 challenge game. It was a good end of season workout and the team enjoyed playing against players from another county.
