Longstone GAC Notes

(Monday, August 08)

*The club seniors played Burren in the senior championship on Sunday evening in Pairc Esler and in the last minute of the game the referee, Gabriel Tumelty, collapsed on the field. He received immediate emergency aid and was taken away to Daisy Hill for further treatment. Hopefully Gabriel will make a full recovery over time. The club sends Gabriel and his family our best wishes at this time. The game was abandoned and is due be replayed next week in Newry. At the time the score was 1-12 to 0-12 for Burren.
*Last Tuesday, Longstone minors put the disappointment of losing the crucial league game against St Johns the previous week behind them to win away to Attical in the first series of games in the county championship. The hosts started brightly and tried playing the crowded defence tactic. However, once the visitors learned to cope with this they started picking points off from distance, and Longstone ran out comfortable winners by the end. If the minors can get the injured lads back playing they could have a good run in the championship
*The U-14s were at home to Warrenpoint B in the second round of the B championship and recorded a good win. Even though this was a B side they were playing against Longstone had to be in good form to win. There were good performances from Owen Haughian in goals, Tony Young, Saran McElroy and Aidan Rogers in defence while up front Tyrone Poland, Joseph Young and Jordan Doran all played very well. The team also welcomed back Dean Haughian after his injury and it was good to have him back again.
*The U-8s were at the Atticall tournament on Saturday and played several games against the home team, Mayobridge and Rostrevor. The players enjoyed their day and thanks to the Glasdrumman club for hosting the games.

*U-16 players should be at Art’s Shop at 6.45pm on Thursday (tomorrow) to depart for the game in Glasdrumman.
*The club will host their annual U-8 tournament this Saturday in Longstone Park and action is due to start at 10.30am sharp. Players are asked to be up at the pitch for 10am and would players’ parents please leave up a loaf of sandwiches. Barbecue will also be available.

*Longstone will host a Social Sevens tournament this Saturday for the first time, involving a number of clubs, and the action starts at 3pm (after the U8 tournament, taking place the same day, ends). There will be 8 teams taking part, including Drumgath, Clonduff, An Riocht, Longstone, Ballymartin (inc. Paul Higgins), Burren (inc. John ‘Shorty’ Treanor) and Meath team St Michael’s, Carlinstown (including past county players Martin O’Connell and Ollie Murphy). It promises to be an enjoyable event. Refreshments served afterwards in the Hall.

*Longstone’s U-14 camogs have qualified for the county Shield Final for the second year in a row, having won the title last year. Their opponents will be Castlewellan and more details next week on venue and time.
