Longstone GAC Notes
(Sunday, April 14)
ACL I: Longstone 0-6 Downpatrick 0-13
*The senior league playing season started on Friday evening for these two teams in Longstone Pk. and the visitors got the scores in the second half to leave Longstone with the win. The first quarter of the game was an even enough affair and it was 0-3 to 0-3 after 16 minutes, all scores, bar one ‘45’, coming from frees. The second quarter saw the east Down side begin to dominate possession more and they went into the lead by two, including the first point from play by Conor McGrady in the 23rd minute. Just before half-time Longstone reduced the deficit to one with Conor Doran’s fourth free of the game to leave it 0-4 to 0-5 at the interval. The Hoops began the second period well and scored two early points from play before Conor Doran scored Longstone’s only point from play in the 10th minute and Downpatrick led by two. However, between the 12th and 22nd minutes the visitors scored four to make it 0-11 to 0-5 in their favour and they were firmly in control. Late on the sides exchanged points and just before the final whistle Downpatrick’s Conor McGrady capped off an impressive midfield performance with his second point from play and the last score of the game. Overall the visitors were the better team, but this Longstone team was a much changed side from the one which finished up last season with the numbers of players not available, for various reasons, in double figures. A good number of players with little or no experience of senior football were used in this game and this will continue going forward, but hopefully through playing games and gaining more experience they will develop at this level. There were good performances from Malachy Trainor and Daithi Young on the Longstone side, while Downpatrick’s most consistent were Conor McGrady and Garrett Trainor.

*Our Reserve team were at home to Burren on Sunday evening and played well to win the game by four points. Playing with the wind in the first half Longstone opened up an early three point lead but Burren goaled to tie the game. Gradually the home team pulled away again and led by four at half-time. The second period was a real competitive affair and the teams were level with five minutes to go. Longstone were playing against the wind and had their back to the wall so to speak, however, they showed great spirit to finish the game strongly and get the last scores of the game to win by four points. This wasa hard fought victory with a welcome return to action of Blaine Rafferty in goals who made some very good saves, especially one in the crucial last few minutes, which inspired the team to a deserved win.
