Longstone GAC Notes

 (Sunday, May 19)

*Camogie notes: On Thursday Longstone U-14s played host to Mayobridge for the 5th round of the South Down League.  It was all guns blazing from the start of this game as Taylor Poland opened the scoring with an early point, followed by another from Orianna McGoey. This set the play for the entire game with Mayobridge successfully retaliating with a number of scores. There was a strong presence in the Longstone forward line with Aine Trimle, Orla Smith and Sarah Fitzpatrick constantly pushing the ball forward and making space for the scoring midfielders.  At the opposite end of the pitch, skilful defenders Aislinn Trimble, Cora Trimble, Colleen Rafferty and Tierna McCartan worked tirelessly defending goalie Breanna Magorrian who had some tremendous puck-outs from the goal mouth which culminated in an outstanding win for our girls. Well done to both teams and thanks to referee Veronica Baldwin. On Sunday Longstone hosted the regional U-6,U-8 and U-10 camogie blitz.  Fortunately for us we were graced with a lovely dry day compared to the previous one, which added to the success of the day.  Sixteen teams in all took part from Longstone, Clonduff, An Riocht and Kilcoo. Longstone’s U-6 team consisting of Emily Barry, Grace Lacey, Caitlin Fitzpatrick, Fodhla Rogan, Katie Conway, Orla Cousins and Chloe McAlinden, mentored by Teresa, were a joy to watch as they played their wee hearts out through each game. They had great fun and marked their opponents well and showed  great potential for the future. At the same time our U-8s  also had good fun battling hard in their own section of the blitz.  Cousins Grainne Rooney and Eabha Barry, along with Aoife Fitzpatrick, Alex Campbell and Eva Lacey really played as a team using all their new skills that they have learned to date and making their mentor Jackie very proud.  Well done to both sides! Fortunately for Longstone we were able to have 2 teams for the U-10 division.  Firstly we had Abbie O’Hare, sisters Sophie and Yasmin Maginn, Teagan Magorrian Natasha Rooney and Olivia Magee, led brilliantly by Mentor Patricia.  This side was the younger of the two teams but that didn’t deter them from playing every bit as well as some of the older and bigger players.  With each game they played, their determination and confidence grew stronger. They had a lot of fun meeting the other girls from various teams, so well played and well done girls. The second of our U-10 teams consisted of sisters Katie and Kirsty Rodgers, Linden Haughian, Holly Trainor , Grainne Cunningham and Tara Rooney, and team mentor was Aedin who really took pride in her team.  This bunch of girls had the edge on experience and it showed on the day and this team was undefeated.  There was some amazing scoring from Tara and Katie, and outstanding play and leadership from Grainne, fantastic defending from Kirsty and Linden, and superb goal keeping from Holly. Well done. Many thanks to everyone involved for making the day a great success including Longstone Club, the teams, parents and helpers for their support and the lovely refreshments, mentors, young referees (Anne, Katie, Orianna and Taylor) and lastly Sean Rogers.

*The U-12s were away to Saval recently and put in a great performance in difficult conditions to come away with the points. In very windy conditions they adapted quickly and used the ball sensibly and had gained an excellent advantage by the break. It was only late in the game, after some of the younger players were introduced, that the home team gained a foothold in the game to tag on some scores. Overall it was a good performance away from home against strong opposition.

*The U-14s were at home on Monday of last week to Baileglas, and playing against a strong breeze in the first half found it hard to get into their rhythm with wayward shooting a feature of their play so at the break Longstone were trailing by eight points. However, from the start of the second half, and with the wind at their backs, the team clicked into gear and bombarded the opposition with wave after wave of attacks. The accuracy of the shooting really improved and by the final whistle Longstone had won by a comfortable margin. Well done to all.
