ACL I:        Kilcoo 1-12                   Longstone 1-5

*Owen Roe Pk. was the venue on a windy Monday evening last week for this game and it was the home team’s tenacious work-rate and greater economy in front of goal which proved to be the difference. The visitors, playing with the wind in the first half, opened the scoring with a point but a goal from Gary McEvoy which finished off a good Kilcoo passing move in the 8th minute opened the home team’s account to give Kilcoo an early boost. Longstone battled and levelled the game by the midway point of the first half with three points from placed kicks. During the second quarter the Magpies regained the initiative and scored four points in a row to lead 1-5 to 0-4 at the break.  The second period started well for the Stone with a well powerful shot to the net from about 14 yards by midfielder John Magee and the visitors were back in the game. However, between the 4th and 14th minutes Kilcoo racked up 7 points in a row, including six from play, to lead 1-12 to 1-4, and it was going to be tall order for Longstone playing against the breeze to threaten Kilcoo after this. The last quarter only yielded one further score, a converted free by Michael Ireland of Longstone as the game petered out to a comfortable win for Kilcoo.

*Longstone reserves finally got their league campaign started away to Drumgath on Friday evening. The team had one pre-season friendly, but the players started off showing a lot of promise, however, some wayward shooting allowed the home team to keep within touching distance of their opponents. Allied to this there were some lapses in concentration in the first half. The Stone knuckled down in the second period but still couldn’t shake off a spirited Drumgath side. With some staunch defending from Patrick Haughian, who was making his first competitive appearance for 5 years, and brave half-back work from Paul Trimble who took a fine point, and some long range points from the classy Gary Trainor, Longstone were able to grind out a four point victory. John-Paul Haughian and Collie Burden were named reserve captain and vice-captain respectively of the team and are wished well in their respective roles for the year. Team: James Rodgers, Michael Young, Patrick Haughian, Daithi Young, Darren McDowell, Glen Burden, Paul Trimble, Gary Trainor, Cormac Poland, Malachy Trainor, Collie Burden, Ciaran Rogers, Tiarnan Haughian, Ryan McDowell, John Trimble, Danny Trimble, Adrian Burden, John-Paul Logan, Jamie McCartan.

*U-12s were at Pairc na Riochta two Sundays ago for the last Go Games blitz before the league starts and were in great form. They had wins over Mayobridge Gaels, Mayobridge Ogs, Ballymartin and a one point defeat to An Riocht with the last kick of the game after coming from 5 points down. The various blitzes  have been a great success as we have played teams from all divisions and they have given a very good account of themselves, winning most of their games and only small margins between us and any team we lost to. Well done boys and girls on a great effort.
