ACL I Longstone 0-10 Rostrevor 0-8
*On Saturday afternoon Longstone Pk. was the venue for this relegation battle with the prize of survival in division 1 for the winner at stake. It was a keenly contested game throughout with the sides level on four separate occasions, including when normal time was up in the second half. However, Longstone produced the scores when needed and two from play by Michael Ireland and Ambrose Rogers in injury time proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. The visitors opened the scoring in the 2nd minute with an Adrian Mackin free but two Longstone efforts from Ireland and Ryan Kelly by the 7th minute helped the home team to settle. Good work from Kevin McGrath led to a Rostrevor free in the 17th minute and Dermot Mackin tapped over for the equaliser. The teams were level for less than a minute as Michael Ireland made space and converted from long range soon afterwards and he followed this up with an effport in the 24th minute to make it 0-4 to 0-2. The sides swapped points just before half-time, but there was also a great goal chance for Ireland but the Rostrevor keeper, Jonathan Parr, saved well to leave it 0-5 to 0-3 for the Stone at the interval. In the first minute of the second period Longstone spurned another goal chance when Conor Poland fired wide from a good position and the first score didn’t arrive until the 9thminute, an Ireland free. Dermot Mackin reduced the Rostrevor deficit to two with a point two minutes later before Ryan Kelly converted a free midway through the half to put the hosts three up again, 0-7 to 0-4. However, between the 16th and 23rd minutes Rostrevor hauled themselves back to level terms with three well taken points from play by Michael Boyle, Conor Magee and Sean Parr respectively. Rostrevor were dangerous on the counter-attack and it seemed that the tide had turned in their favour. The sides swapped one point apiece, Ireland and Adrian Mackin respectively, and it was 0-8 to 0-8 with about two minutes left. It looked like the game might finish level as entering normal time the scoreline hadn’t changed. However, a moment of great skill and composure from that man Ireland again, when under pressure he took a point with his ‘weaker’ right foot, put Longstone up by one in the 31st minute. The play continued at a hectic pace with no more scoring until Ambrose Rogers pointed two minutes late for the last score of the game to make it a two point lead. In the final piece of action Rostrevor hoped for something to happen when a free kick was dropped into the home team’s penalty area, but the ball was cleared and the final whistle was blown. Longstone’s win came about through their single-minded determination to get the result they wanted and this work-rate was typified by the half-back line of Michael Hughes, Mark Doran and Cormac Poland. They also had Michael Ireland who was able to finish a high percentage of his chances. Rostrevor made this an exciting game with their hard efforts and second half comeback and Colm Murney led by example in this regard.

*Well done to the club senior team who made sure of next season in ACL I with the win over Rostrevor on Saturday. Considering Longstone didn’t get their first point of the season until their 6th game of the campaign, a home draw against Mayobridge, it has proved to be a ‘minor miracle’ for Longstone to finish in 7th place in the league, clear of the relegation area.
*U-14 Down ‘C’ Championship Final: Longstone 1-8 Liatroim 3-13. This game was played in Pairc Tomas Ruisiel, Downpatrick, on Saturday and it proved a bridge too far for the Longstone team. The East Down side were a physically bigger team overall and in PJ Davidson, had the outstanding player on view. At half-time Liatroim led 1-9 to 1-1 and although Longstone tried hard to threaten their opponents lead good defence and 2 more Liatroim goals ensured this didn’t happen. The team was: Owen Haughian, Ronan Harrison, Tony Young, Andrew McVeigh, Sean Mullan, Darren Fitzpatrick, Finn McElroy-Banjo, Aidan Rogers, Dean Haughian, Conor Shields, Tyrone Poland, Matthew McAstocker, Jordan Doran, Tiarnan Fegan, Joseph Young. Subs used: Saran McElroy-Banjo, Callum McDowell and Daithi Rogan. Well done to the players and the management team of Michael Haughian, Joseph Fegan and Fearghal Young on their achievements this year. And they thank the club committee for the refreshments supplied on the way home after both the South Down and All County finals.
*School Around the Corner proved a good success in Longstone Hall on Saturday night. Thanks to everyone who took part and reminisced about their schooldays and entertained the crowd with their singing, dancing, storytelling and poetry acts. And thanks to Eimear Rodgers, who did a lot of work in planning and preparing the event.
