ACL I Longstone 0-10 Rostrevor 0-8
*At St Mary’s Pk. on Sunday Burren won by a significant margin in the end to book a league semi-final place. For Longstone it goes down to the wire with relegation, a relegation play-off or survival in ACL I all still possible with one game to play. In heavy conditions, after Friday and Saturday’s rain, it was the home team who settled first and led 0-6 to 0-1 midway through the first half. Longstone’s Michael Ireland converted a free in the 18th minute to reduce the margin to four points. However, a minute late, Burren’s Eoin McCartan made use of space opening up in front of him and cracked a shot off the crossbar from about the ‘21’ and luckily for Burren the rebound hit the outstretched Colin Trainor, the visitors keeper, and flew back into the net. There was only one point apiece in the remaining 11 minutes of the half which left it 1-7 to 0-3 in favour of the home side at half-time. Longstone made a good start to the second period when Ryan Kelly pointed to leave 6 points separating the teams. Then, after about five minutes, Tommy Farrell of Burren suffered an unfortunate injury, and play was held up for 25 minutes until the ambulance took him away to hospital. Thankfully he got out that night and hopefully Tommy will make a speedy recovery. When play resumed Burren were the first to score with a free, but in the 7th minute of the half, good play by Stephen Doran helped create a chance for Ryan Kelly and he drilled his shot to the Burren net. And a minute late Michael Ireland took a fine score from play and Longstone had narrowed the gap to three, 1-5 to 1-8. This glimmer of hope for Longstone gradually faded over the next ten minutes as three points from play, including two form Eoin McCartan, made it a six point gap entering the last ten. Longstone were unable to claw back this lead and raise their effort levels once more as in the remaining time as the heavy pitch drained both sets of players energy and the game pretty much limped to its conclusion with Burren safely home. Burren’s most prominent players overall were Anton McArdle, Eamonn Toner and Eoin McCartan. As a team Longstone played better in the second half and their most influential were Stephen Doran, Mark Poland and Ryan Kelly.
