Longstone GAC Notes
(Sunday, February 13)
*In the Ulster League in Longstone Park on Sunday afternoon, the home side defeated Fr Rocks Cookstown, 2010 All Ireland Intermediate Club Champions, on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-6. The Tyrone side scored two goals in the first five minutes to put it up to the hosts early on, but the next score was a goal from Adrian Trainor which helped to settle Longstone. Over the next twenty minutes the home team had the upper hand and scored a further 1-7, including a goal from Mark Doran who was involved in a move which started from his half-back position and ended with a powerful shot to the net. The visitors converted two late points at the end of the first half to narrow the half-time deficit to five and the scoreline read 2-7 to 2-2. The second period saw the rate of scoring decrease somewhat and about midway through the half Longstone lad by four, but a Malachy Trainor goal gave the Down side a little breathing space and Cookstown were unable to get close in the remaining time. Owen Mulligan, veteran Tyrone county player, made a late appearance for Cookstown which provided the spectators an opportunity to see a well known player from the successful Tyrone team which won 3 All Irelands, and maintain the interest factor in the closing stages. Longstone scorers: Malachy Trainor 1-2, Adrian Trainor & Mark Doran 1-0 each, Stephen Doran & Conor Poland 0-3 each, Michael Hughes 0-2, Barry Doran 0-1.
